Energise - Takeaways

This term we have had two sessions of energise with Whaea Gina. This term she is talking to us about healthy eating. Our recent session was about takeaways and which one is healthiest  to eat. At the beginning of the session Whaea Gina showed us the difference between a healthy heart and a non-healthy heart. Whaea Gina told us it is good to have some fat around your heart to provide cushioning  for your heart but having too much can lead to problems, eg diabetes. After we identified the difference between the two hearts we made a table. One side was least amount of fat and the other was most amount of fat. A helper from the year 7&8’s placed photos of various takeaways on either side. Surprisingly there were quite a lot of photos under the least amount of fat. The pictures underneath the least amount of fat were mostly things that have a lot of veggies or are homemade like Chinese takeaways since they consist mostly of vegetables or burgers (again with a large amount of veggies in it) and chips (that are thick). But the takeaways with the most amount of fat in it were takeaways like KFC, MCDonalds and all other takeaways. After  that we had a test. Whoever won got to get their prize the next time Whaea Gina came in. I think I did a good job at knowing where a certain picture went and I think my group (who won) worked as a team and it went really well. Next time I think we should be a bit more quiet when we are working. Here are some photos:

Technology

Last week on Wednesday, the year 7&8’s went to Moerewa for technology. The year 8’s did cooking (making lasagne) and the year 7’s did woodwork (testing and getting a feel of the machines). We were learning to get used into the old habits of the work place and making sure we made our lasagne healthy. I think I did well following instructions from the teacher but I think I should work on looking at the recipe more.

Energise with Whaea Gina

Yesterday in Te Ngahere we had energise. This week we were learning about takeaways. First we had a look healthy and unhealthy heart. We have to have some fat around our heart to provide some cushioning but if you have to much fat around your heart it can’t beat properly and it can’t circulate enough blood. This can happen with foods like Carls Jr, Mcdonalds, etc. The one that really surprised me was the fish and chips. It had 9.5 teaspoons of fat 1 piece of fish and a small handful of chips. I think I will try and cut down these takeaways.

Beeswax wraps

Yesterday in Te Ngahere we were able to make beeswax wraps. We first got a fabric that we could draw on (I decided to draw sun phases). After we drew our design we went to the Whare Kai and gave Anouk (a lady who taught us about litterless lunches) our fabric so she could dip our fabric into the beeswax. The reason why we made these is because we are trying to reduce the amount rubbish/plastic in our lunches. I enjoyed making the beeswax wrap.

Energise with Whaea Gina

On Monday Whaea Gina came to Te Ngahere and talk to us about breakfast. First she talked about what breakfast means. Breakfast helps you break the fast. Fasting is what people on diets do and it means that they don’t eat for a long period of time or even all day. This can make you lose your concentration and you begin to zone out. And since we sleep for a long period of time we have to breakfast the break the fast! After she told us the meaning of breakfast she gave us each (or put us into groups of 2) a laminated information label. We had to check if it passed the 10,10,5. 10,10,5 is a rule when you are looking for a healthier option for breakfast. Fat has to be less the 10 grams, sugar has to be less the 10 grams and fibre needs to be over 5. A little tip is to look at the per 100g column. Here is my DLO for more information about reading labels:
