Activity 2: A call to arms
Name: Major Charles Heaphy
Why he was awarded the VC for rescuing a soldier under a fire at Waiari near Te Awamutu in 1864 and was rewarded the medal in 1867 (3 years later).
Bonus activity: Women at work
One day I was walking along the deck of the ship when I hear a loud bang. I start to run as I see smoke coming from the far end of the ship. I run towards the room where my patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor. Just as I arrive at the door to their room I hear another loud bang and I tumble on the deck but I manage to get up and push open the door. My hands tremble but I mange to help the soldiers who have sustained injuries. Then it strikes again. This time it throws me across the room but I don't sustain any injuries though. I turn and see that medical equipment is strewn all over the place. I rush over to help nurses who are underneath equipment. I wait for the next bang but it never comes and that, is a relief.

Day 2: The roaring 20's
Activity 1: Popular culture- The silent movie
I think the movie is about people trying to find gold in a really cold place like Antarctica. I wouldn't really like to watch a silent movie because we wouldn't really understand what they are trying to say. So it would kind confuse people.
Activity 2: Art deco
3 because we don't really know what author is trying to achieve and it doesn't have expression but whoever painted it is very artistic.
Bonus Activity: Crossing the Tasman
I am a captain in my plane
My crew shivering in the wake of the storm
My eyes strain to find a landing
I see landing lights
I land safely
A mission well done
Now we rest

Activity 1: St Joseph's Cathedral
Milan Cathedral, Italy, it was built in 1386 and it took six centuries to build
Activity 2: The right to vote
It isn't fair because if men only vote then women think they aren't important and think that their voices are useless and they shouldn't be heard.
Bonus activity: In Flanders's Fields
It made me feel kind of sad because of the sacrifices they made to save our country but it also made me happy because they made us proud and defended our country as best as they could.

Ocean Conservation!
On Monday the year six’s had a visitor come in. Her name was Libby and she is an Ocean Conservationist. She studies Marine animals and her favourite animal is a seal. She likes them because they are the most playful sea animal she has ever studied. She also has a bike made of bamboo! She teaches kids all over the world. I have learnt how long a small manta ray is (4.5 meters) and a large one (8 meters). I really enjoyed Libby coming in.

My awesome creative piece of writing about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
2 weeks ago in Te Ngahere we did creative pieces to fit in our topic for reduce, reuse, recycle. We also did persuasive pieces of writing to persuade our reader to stop using plastic bags. My language features that I needed to learn is Similes, Metaphors, Onomatopoeia and Adjectives. I think I did well in using all these languages features. I think I do need to use them a bit more. Here is my writing:
Tuesday 2nd November 2017
Narritive
The sea rescue
Moral: Don’t dump fishing nets other wise fish and marine life will get trapped!
Splash! “Hi! My name is Luna! I am a mermaid! I have a story to tell. I was saved by human beings. It was all because of plastic and fishing nets”. (Not Luna) Let’s begin.
Luna swam in never ending crystal clear water. Not a piece of rubbish in sight. Luna paddled with fish, jumped with dolphins until, she came across a strong current and it was carrying only one thing: PLASTIC. Luna tried to swim away but got caught in fishing net. Crash! The wave swept her away like leaf in the wind. She was tied up like a baby bundled up in a blanket. She was a frozen statue. She struggled to get untied and she finally fell into deep sleep after struggling for hours on end.
She drifted ashore. She was as still as statue. Finally, a boy and his father (The father’s name was Johnny and Finn was the boy) were gathering there fishing gear and walked straight into the mermaid. They started at her in wonder. They then stared at each other and decided they had to do something. They started to untangle her. They did this swiftly and carefully so they don’t accidentally cut the mermaid. They soon untangled Luna. Suddenly, Luna woke up and screamed “Ahhh!!!”. She started at the pair. Everything turned to a stand still. Then she looked down and saw that the net was untied. She smiled at the pair and thanked them. “Thank you, Thank You! I am so glad I was untangled from that net. I better go now. Goodbye!” With that she took off but then she waved the pair and they waved back. “Wow!” said Johnny. “Finding a mermaid on the beach and saving her! This is the most coolest day ever!” “Agreed!” said Finn. They dashed back home to share the story with friends and family.
“That is the end of my adventurous story!” said Luna. “See ya!” and with that she dived to the depth below.
The end!

My awesome persuasive writing piece!!
In Te Ngahere we have been doing persuasive writing for the past few weeks. Our WALT was to use the correct structure for a persuasive piece of writing. Our topic was Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. I think I did well doing the persuasive structure and I need to work on where I need to put my capitals EG: Places and names. Here is my persuasive piece of writing:
Wednesday 18.10.17
Should we use plastic bags in supermarkets?
WALT: Use the correct structure for a persuasive.
I am writing to give my opinion on plastic bags. I think they are a waste of time and money. They kill marine animals! Do you really want our marine animals to go extinct? Obviously not! Here are my reasons why you shouldn’t use plastic bags.
Firstly, did you know that New World and Countdown are going plastic bag free? New world is generously giving out reusable bags so that NZ is the amazing “Clean green country” that other continents think we are. But it is not just New world that are changing their policies with plastic bags. A Countdown in Collingwood has already stop plastic bags. That little town has made a huge impact on the way our new government thinks.
Secondly, 4 billion bags will end up as litter each year which is enough to circle the globe 63 times! So then you go to the next option which is the paper bags. But did you know that you are actually doing more harm than plastic. We will be consuming 14 million trees a year, takes 4 times as much energy that plastic, uses over 12 million barrels of oil annually and lastly paper products will create 70% more air pollution than plastic and 50% more water pollution than plastic.
Thirdly, Recycling paper uses 98% more energy that plastic and often it is not even used to make more bags. Plastic is time consuming and is very expensive. Many of the bags will be shipped to China or India to be burnt/incinerated. Paper is able to biodegrade unlike plastic but once underneath a pile of rubbish the lack of oxygen will slow the process. The stuff doesn’t get recycled, well… it ends up in our oceans and traps animals and ingesting it can be highly deadly to our animals. Which will lead into catastrophic events such as global warming and climate change.
So, Does recycling really make a difference? Yes, but recycling is a very time consuming process. So what do you think?

My amazing visual mihi
During the week we have been putting the final touches on our visual mihi. I chose these pictures because they help me understand the mihi visually and also remind me of what that picture means. It helps me remind myself because we have little captions that remind us of what the picture means and a simple translation. Here is my mihi:

My amazing Spanish information report
WALT: Write the structure for an information report
All About Spain
Key:
Simple sentence(s)
Compound sentence(s)
Complex sentences(s)
Did you know that Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union? If you are visiting Spain you will learn about the cuisine, climate, population and celebrations that are celebrated within Spain. You will learn about Spain plus if you are visiting for a holiday.
Cuisine (Food They Eat)
One of the most popular dishes is a stew called Asturian bean stew. It is the most loved dish around Spain. Their cuisine involves dishes that has been past by traditions and generations. The things that are included in Asturian bean stew is Austrian beans, Chorizo, Morcilla, Pork Belly, Onion, Garlic, Paprika and Saffron and lastly olive oil.
The climate
The climate in Spain can get increasingly hot and this temperature is known as Mediterranean climate. It is another way for saying very hot weather. I am sure people in Spain are used to it. Fun Fact: The temperature in summer can get up to 35 degrees!
The Population
The Spanish population is 46,070,146 million people plus tourists. So it would be pretty crowded in Spain with all the busking and big crowds.
Celebrations
The top ten celebrations in Spain is Semana Santa, San FermÃn, Tomatina tomato fight, Las Fallas, Feria de sevilla, Carnival, Christmas and New Years, Cristianos y moros, Semana Grande and Tamborrada. All of these celebrations happen to celebrate things related to holy or catholic purposes.
We have learnt what the cuisine, climate, Population and celebration’s celebrated within Spain. If you go to Spain and make sure you are prepared for hot weather and crowded towns.
In week two, Te Ngahere made information reports about different countries. First we had to chose a country, then we got to write. I chose the country Spain. Our WALT was to write an information report. Here is my information report.

Our amazing trip to Waitangi!
Reflection - Last week on Tuesday we went to the Treaty Grounds. When we got there our guides introduced themselves and then we went to go to our activities. First my group went to make some kites out of Nikao plants. Next we played this rope game. There was a person that said Maui (Left), Matou (Right) and Ki waenganui (Middle). Then we played another game that would improve our hearing. Then for our last activity we went to explore the trees and some of their healing purposes. We then planted little plants. We hope to see them grow and improve. The reason why we went is because of the Matariki celebrations.

Cool Fidget Spinner Art!!
13/06/17
WALT:Parentheses.
Should we be allowed to have fidget spinners in our classes?
Hi there. My name is Taleisha and I think that fidget spinners should not be allowed to be in classes because they distract fellow students. (Here are my reasons)
Firstly, they are a distraction to people if they are doing work or tests. The noise annoys other kids and they can’t focus.
Secondly, they are addictive and used when we are supposed to do work and when the teacher comes and checks your work you have nothing.
Thirdly, when people say they calm people when they are stressed or angry I think (Obviously) that is just a rip off. It just gets people addicted.
Fourthly, they cost money (Boo!!!) and sometimes they can be a bit expensive. The reason why people make inventions is because of joy and MONEY!
For these reasons I think that fidget spinners should not be allowed in classes.
Last week Te Ngahere and Te Maunga got to make fidget spinner art (WALT: Use space, crayon and dye). We were also going to write a persuasive piece of writing (WALT: Use parentheses). The prompt was ‘Should we be allowed to use Fidget Spinners in our classes.’

Making Yummy Ice Cream!!!!
WALT: Write a recount and metaphors
Making YUMMY ice cream
On Friday 16, Te Ngahere made ice cream. We had to go into pairs. My buddy was Yuktha and we had to work together to make the ice cream.
Firstly, we got two bags, one small and one large. We then put cream, sugar and vanilla essence in the smaller bag.
Next, we put the freezing ice and gritty salt in the bigger bag and we had to put a lot of salt. 6 tablespoons!!!!
Then, we put the cream in the big bag of salt and went outside and shook it until the ice cream was ready to eat. The bag was a freezing ice block. But while we were shaking, the bag popped. The ice went everywhere!
Later, we got to eat the ice cream! The ice cream was so sweet and yummy! It spilt everywhere but nobody cared! We were all eating delicious ice cream!
The End!!!!
(By Taleisha)
Reflection:On Friday 16th June we made Ice Cream because we finished our learning plans in ten minutes (we were learning to manage our learning and help other students if they needed help). I was making ice cream with my buddy Yuktha. In the end it all turned out as yummy ice cream!

Tim Tipene Author visit!!
Tim’s message is that there is a warrior in everyone. I enjoyed when he read the books and he used expression when he was talking as the characters. He also said that when he is writing his books he is all of the characters. Before he came to our school Shirley, our school librarian read one of his books. These are the names of his books: Hinemoa Te Toa, Taming the Taniwha, The Wooden Fish and Maui the Sun Catcher.

My awesome vibrant tangelo story!!!
Tuesday 21st February 2017
The sticky tangelo.
The tangelo looks as vibrant as a mini orange ball. It has bumps here and there and in the middle is a green spike at the tippy top.
It is as smooth as glass with little bumps in between, it is super shiny and glistens in the light. I press my fingers against it to find it is full of yummy juice.
It smells so sweet and also has a leafy smell. When I opened it, it smelt as sweet as candyfloss.
The sound of me peeling the skin sounded like a little ripping noise, ‘ Rippppppp’. You have to put it close to your ear to hear the noise.
The best bit is tasting it. As soon as you put the segment full of yummy juice into your mouth, it explodes with this sour juice, like a lemon. The taste is so sweet and you go to lick your fingers to make sure you pick up the juices left behind. Slurrp! The juices are as sour as a lemon and they make your taste buds tickle. Yum!!!
The End.
Taleisha
My reflection for the tangelo.
Monday 6th March 2017
For writing we were learning how to add in descriptive language and language features. We also used the five senses EG: felt, smelt, looked, tasted and sounds like.
Our success criteria was to add in descriptive languages and features to make our writing better.
I need to work on adding more language features like metaphors and alliteration.

My amazing summer writing
Tuesday 7th February.
I Remember…
Splashing in the icy cool turquoise water.
My family all playing and having fun in the ocean flocking around.
I was walking around listening to the waves speaking in a wavy language
Getting splashed by the salty water.
I wandered and stared into the sky watching the seagulls playfully swimming in the sea. I lay on the soft sand that comforted me.
I was grateful that the cooling sea came and splashed me.
That was my summer
In Te Ngahere we had to write a descriptive piece of writing. The start of a descriptive writing piece is what you were doing, then something that was happening, then something you did, why you did it and then finish with that was summer or something similar.
I think that I went well with understanding the structure and was able to know what to do. I think I need to work on adding more descriptive words in my story.
